A drink holder, a remote holder, a tech device holder, a home décor holder…coffee tables are the centerpiece of your living room. They even sometimes hold your feet, your meal or your work! So, we are huge proponents of taking your time, learning the tips and tricks, and really doing your homework on which coffee table is right for you.  

It’s important to take your living room seating into consideration when finding your perfect coffee table. Yep, the right size and shape to go with your sofa, reclining furniture and everything else is definitely something to think about!

Are there coffee table rules when it comes to the size and shape? No and yes! No, because you should always go with your gut and the style you love most, but yes in that there are guidelines we love following to make sure the aesthetic of your room is on point. Typically, your coffee table should be at least half the length of your sofa, but no more than 2/3rds the length. It should also be around the same height as the seat of the sofa, give or take four inches. If you have a sectional with a chaise only apply the length rule to the part without the chaise, not the whole sectional. 

So, what shape should I get? Standard sofas tend to look best with a rectangle- or oval-shaped coffee tables since most people sitting on the sofa will be able to reach it. A sectional or sofa with a chaise pairs perfectly with a square shape since it fits right into that open space. And if you have a smaller room or looking for something a bit different, try a round style (great for kids or pets, too—no sharp corners!). 

Do you have any options that are fashionable and functional? Yep! Storage coffee tables are perfect for keeping electronics, remotes, blankets or even toys tucked away and out of sight. Lift top coffee tables are a great choice if your coffee table doubles as a desk or dining space. Ottoman coffee tables are wonderful if you’re going after that cozy vibe or if you have kiddos (they’re super soft!). Last, but not least, we have some multi-purpose coffee tables with storage stools that slide right on out for extra seating.
